Best Practices - Care for Inmate Populations
Health Ministry to take over care of BC inmates - This review of best practices for care of inmate populations contributed to the decision by the BC Ministry of Health to move away from private care delivery and have the Provincial Health Services Authority assume responsibility for the delivery of medical services at B.C.’s 10 provincial correctional centres, as of Oct. 1, 2017. A key goal of this is to ensure the continuity of care for inmates as they move between correctional centres and the community.

Case Study: Empower the community: New Brunswick’s approach to overcoming poverty
This case study is one of four that illustrate the application of social determinants of health in public health. Each of the case studies reflects a different geographical region of Canada. The case studies were developed as a knowledge exchange tool to support a workshop hosted by the National Collaborating Centre for Determinants of Health and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Population and Public Health in Toronto, Ontario on February 14-15, 2012.

North America’s Occupy movement cast the spotlight on an issue that has been the focus of grave concern around the world – income inequality. So the media flurry that came with the release of Statistics Canada’s latest report on the Income of Canadians (September 11, 2013) was no surprise. Shocking, though, was the fact that the CBC shows Daybreak South (September 12, 2013) and The 180 (September 13, 2013) featured leading economists, both of whom were completely uninformed of the health, social and even the economic costs of income inequality.

Case Study: Developing organizational capacity for SDH
Organizational capacity is essential to supporting public health action on social determinants of health (SDOH). This case study follows four public health units in Ontario as they work to embed a SDOH approach in their organizations. Each takes advantage of distinct strengths and approaches, while sharing a number of common features. Unique aspects of their work are profiled in vignettes interspersed throughout the case study.

Case Studies: "Building CASTLES" and "Applying Research"
These case stories demonstrate use of various methods and tools for public health created or assessed by the National Collaborating Centre for Methods and Tools. The first, "Building CASTLES Through Social Media" profiles use of the Centres for Disease Control Social Media Toolkit to encourage cancer screening. "Applying Research for Better Public Health Decisions" shows how Peel Public Health used the Applicability and Transferability of Evidence (A&T) tool, developed by NCCMT, to make better decisions about the best available programs and services for the region.

Communicating the Social Determinants of Health
To make progress on implementing the Social Determinants of Health, support must be built among politicians and policy-makers, public health practitioners, the media, community groups and activists, and the general public. Gaining traction on the SDH is complex, as the concepts revolve around individual and cultural values. Effective communication requires knowledge of potential strategies to reach and mobilize these groups, skill in framing messages in a way that will allow careful consideration of the issues, and an appreciation for the political context in which proposed change will take place.

With over 30 years of experience as a professional writer, I have researched and written a wide range of materials for health professionals. My focus is on public health, more specifically, the determinants of health, mental health and the built environment. I summarize research and seek out best/better practice to support the development of policies and programs to improve population health. My writing is clear, concise and focused on improved health outcomes.

Wellspring Strategies is the consulting company I started in 2003. While working independently, I have gathered teams of up to ten skilled collaborators to complete larger projects. As a business owner, I am used to juggling a number of commitments, consistently meeting or exceeding client expectations.
